Why it matters
A tick is not evidence
A clipboard in the cab shows someone initialled a box. It cannot show the pump reached pressure, which hose lengths were on board or whether anyone walked round the appliance at all.
Readiness is scattered
Defects sit in the radio log, service dates in a spreadsheet and breathing apparatus test dates with the technician. Nobody can say which appliances are fully ready without ringing around.
Career and volunteer crews check differently
One template, the same order every time and the reason for each item on the phone, so a volunteer on a fortnightly roster checks to the same standard as a full-time crew.
After an incident, the record matters
When something fails on the fireground you need to show what was checked, by whom and against which procedure. Rebuilding that from paper is slow and incomplete.

Defects to the workshop
- A failed item raises the defect and sets the appliance to restricted or off run automatically
- Work orders raised from the board; closing one clears its defects and resets the service
- Shift handover: fuel, odometer and notes passed on and accepted by the next crew
